For a very long time, I’ve wanted to get an arts and crafts subscription box, not only because of my love of arts… But also because I believe in it’s therapeutic abilities. The Maker Crate, by KiwiCo, will provide you every month with a different arts & crafts project. The box contains all the products and tools you need to make a certain craft. The cost is 29.5$ + shipping for international orders, which is one of the cheaper subscriptions. Especially for what you get, and I definitely think it’s worth the money.

The materials tools

The box contains all of the materials and tools that you need to make the book holder stencil art. Which is great because you don’t need to buy, or have anything extra to make it. You get everything in almost exactly the amount that you need it. So you don’t need to go out and buy anything, and you won’t have a bunch of leftovers. Which is something that’s always annoying, to have too many extra materials and products laying around.

For the book holder stencil art, I got in the box the following materials and tools:

2 stencil sheets
Permanent marker
2 brushes
4 acrylic paints
Paint tray
3 templates
Wood glue
Cutting mat
Washi tape
Craft knife – which was supposed to be in the box, but for some reason was missing from mine.

The final product

All in all, it’s quite a useful product, especially for someone like me who loves books, to the point where I barely have space for all of them. So this helps solve that problem somewhat. I was hoping to put it on my nightstand, and use it for my latest reads. However, it’s much bigger than I thought it would be, so that’s not possible. The book holder is probably best placed somewhere on the floor, preferably in a corner where you won’t bump into it and knock it over. It also came out really nice, and I really like having it as an addition to my room. I put in about 4-5 books, and all in all it holds fairly well.

The quality

All the tools and materials are of very high quality, and I can tell right away that they are not cheap. Which is good, because it makes the whole process of making the book holder much easier. There’s nothing quite as frustrating, like making something with low quality materials and tools. It also means that KiwiCo put a lot of thought and investment into it, to give us the best experience possible. However, the end result isn’t the best. I’m not sure if it’s me or the product itself… But the pieces of wood that the book holder is assembled out of, aren’t held together well. The glue inside stuck well, but the junctions where the pieces meet, wiggle and don’t hold very well. If left alone, it stands properly and holds the books. But if you’re not careful when you move it around, it can come apart. I tried adding more glue, but it still didn’t hold very well.

The process

Personally, I love arts and crafts, and I found this project to be super fun. I also believe that it is simple and easy enough, that almost anyone can make it. And even people who don’t normally enjoy arts, can actually have fun doing this. It’s very therapeutic and you don’t have to overthink anything. If you don’t want or can’t be creative and think of your own stencil idea, they give it to you and you don’t have to. Which solves any stress that may occur over not being creative enough, or having no ideas. It also didn’t take too long, so there wasn’t enough time to get bored of it, and it also didn’t take up my whole day. I did have to wait 30 minutes to let the paint dry in the middle and at the end… But that gives you a nice break to stretch.

Overall, the whole concept is amazing. Whether you’re a creative person or not, it’s always nice to get a project every month without having to think too much. You don’t have to work hard to make it or buy and search for what you need. It’s also a great way to spend some quality time with yourself, or with a loved one. The idea of making a book holder is also a cute idea. It may seem simple, but it’s not something I would have ever thought to make. Which is nice, they provide you with a project to create something new, that you wouldn’t have otherwise.
