Top 8 things to do on Valentine’s Day for Singles
These are the top 8 things to do on Valentine’s Day when you’re single and alone.
There is no Valentine’s Day official rule book, which dictates how to spend the day, who can celebrate it and who can’t. You can choose to do with it what you will, no matter your relationship status. The main problem is society pressuring us into believing it’s sad to be alone on Valentine’s Day… But we should do what we can to just tune them out and do our own thing. The only approval we truly need is our own, and it’s time we start valuing ourselves enough to start living by it. And not others. Personally, I’ve never been big on celebrating Valentine’s Day, even when I did have a boyfriend. However, I do think it is a great opportunity to celebrate the love you do have in your life, not wallow over the one you don’t.
So whether you’re celebrating your self love or a platonic love, here are some great things you can do to celebrate Valentine’s Day when you’re single… All of which will help you develop and maintain your self love. Both by spending quality time with yourself, and by showing yourself you’re worth the investment. Most of them are also pretty simple, and fairly easy to execute.
1. Spend it with your loved ones
As I mentioned above, there are no rules to Valentine’s Day, and there’s no right way to celebrate it. Life is about so much more than just one type of love and relationship. So if you are single, this is a great opportunity to celebrate the other types of love and relationships in your life. Especially if this is your first V-day alone and you’re not ready to spend it alone just yet… This is a great day and opportunity to do something with your favourite people. You don’t have to even go all out, or do anything special, just being together can make a world of difference.
The following activities are written as things you can do on your own, but they are also great to do with a friend or family member. You can also do whatever it is you usually do together, something fun that you enjoy.
2. Go on a stay-cation
This is not only a great way to spend quality time with yourself, but also a wonderful opportunity to take a much needed break. It may cost you a small sum, but it’s also a great investment in yourself. If you’re constantly stingy with yourself, you’re not only decreasing your own value, you’re also causing yourself to be jaded. Which is a fast track to burn out. Valentine’s Day is definitely a wonderful opportunity and a good excuse to do something extra for yourself. As an added bonus, a stay-cation will also help you grow comfortable with yourself and your own company.
If you don’t have enough of a budget to rent a hotel room for a night, and you have a friend or family member who lives in another city, you can also sleep at their house. Then go out exploring alone or with them, or a mixture of both.
3. Explore a different city
This is definitely one of my favourite self-dates to take myself on, whether it’s Valentine’s Day or not. It’s a fairly easy way to go on an adventure, which will not only be fun and exciting… But is also plausible under a budget. All you have to do is hop on a bus or train to another city near you, as far or near as you wish. To save time, you can even use the ride to look up the city and choose things to do. Don’t pressure yourself and don’t stress about it. It should be fun and exciting and even relaxing. Try to just go with the flow and see where the day takes you. You can even work on your confidence by talking to people you meet along the way. Ask for directions or recommendations where to go and what to do. Which will also improve your day, and assure you’ll do something good.
4. Have a lazy day at home
Whether you binge watch your favourite show, a new show… Play games on your phone, do some arts and crafts, or anything else you desire… Make sure to choose something that will help you relax. Something that will be a much needed treat for you. While we often make ourselves feel guilty for doing nothing and procrastinating… And we should push ourselves to be active and do more… We should also allow ourselves a day here and there to just let our brain and body rest. Allowing yourself to shut off your brain for the day will give you a much needed break… As well as help you reduce your stress and overthinking. Not to mention, it’s always good to learn how to just be with yourself. To be comfortable alone, without having to keep yourself occupied.
5. Home cooked meal and movie night
Personally I love cooking, I find it very relaxing and therapeutic. Not to mention, it’s a great skill to gain and maintain. You don’t even have to do anything intricate or complicated, just something fun and yummy that you will enjoy eating. Especially if you have to work during the day, it’s a fairly simple and easy self date to execute. Followed by a nice relaxing evening, watching a movie or a tv series. You can also treat yourself to a nice drink and some yummy snacks, to make it even more special.

6. Stroll and picnic
This is yet another simple, yet fun and effective self-date. It’s definitely great if you’re on a budget. To get a full rundown of this date, you can check out my posts for a solo stroll & ice-cream date, and a solo picnic self-date. They will definitely give you all the information you need to create this self-date for yourself. If you’re on a budget, you don’t even have to buy much, if anything at all. You can perhaps just use whatever you have at home, or just buy something small. But if you can spare some change, try to treat yourself to something nice and special. I highly recommend you try to invest in yourself, because you also deserve to get some nice things. And as I’ve already mentioned, treating yourself is a great way to show you some much needed appreciation.
7. Spa day for one
You can choose to either go all out and take yourself to a proper spa, or just create a nice spa day for yourself at home. Either way, this is such a great way to show yourself some self love and appreciation. Not to mention one of the best ways to learn how to be more comfortable in your own company and skin. Especially since your nourishing said skin in this self-date. A nice spa date is definitely a great way to give yourself some TLC. But also an amazing opportunity to allow your brain and body to shut off for a bit. All you have to think about is what part of your body you want to focus on next.
8. Shopping spree
Who doesn’t enjoy a nice shopping spree from time to time? I’m not a huge shopper, in fact, I don’t enjoy a long shopping spree. Shops make me dizzy quite literally. But even I like to go all out once in a while. So if you can, this is definitely a fun way to spend some alone time. And it’s definitely a great way to invest in yourself and treat yourself to some nice things. Show yourself some much needed appreciation. If you can prepare in advance, you can put a small sum aside every month, and save it up especially for this. It will make it an extra special treat.
Whatever you choose to do, try to be all in, without too many distractions from the outside. Definitely no stressing over things you can’t control, or worrying about all the things you “should be doing”. Focus on yourself, on the here and now, and not on any tasks and work you need to get done. You’ll have time for that later. I also recommend preparing in advance, and try to get whatever you can done beforehand, so it takes some weight off your shoulders. That way, you’ll be able to relax with a quieter mind.
